Why Red Eye Happens
Red eye happens when a camera flash fires close to the lens axis in low light. The subject's pupils are dilated in the dark, and the flash reflects off the blood-rich retina straight back into the lens — producing that red glow instead of the normal black pupil.
It's most common with on-camera flashes and phone cameras, where the flash sits just millimeters from the lens. Off-camera or bounce flash largely avoids it, but for photos already taken, fixing it after the fact is the only option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my photo get uploaded anywhere?
No. The red eye remover runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your photo is decoded and edited locally on your device and never sent to a server.
Why didn't clicking fix the red eye?
Try clicking as close to the center of the pupil as you can. If the red area is very small or blends into a similarly colored background, the tool may not find a clean edge to work with — zooming in on the source photo before uploading can help.
What file formats are supported?
JPEG, PNG and WebP are supported. HEIC photos from iPhones aren't currently supported in-browser — convert to JPEG first.
Can I undo a fix?
Yes. Use Undo to step back through your fixes one at a time, or Reset to return to the original, unedited photo.
