Note on Looks
Looks are not included in the default downloadable preset. The reason is that they often require extra files installed on your system (e.g. many film emulation packs).
Without these files in place, the presets downloaded from PixelPeeper couldn't be imported. That's why PixelPeeper presets focus on universal settings. If you want to replicate the Look part, you can copy it manually, but in many cases, it won't have an effect without the looks installed on your computer first.
The "Full XMP Settings" version of the downloadable preset will include the look and other (complete) adjustments. If you have the required looks installed, you should be able to import this XMP file to Lightroom.

How this look was made
The edit creates a restrained editorial street-photography look: softly faded contrast, muted blue-gray architecture, warm masonry, and selective red-orange accents that draw attention to the worker. Geometric correction and a substantial crop reinforce the building’s symmetry, while tonal recovery keeps detail in both the stone sculpture and the dark clothing.
Overall look and composition
The frame was cropped substantially while retaining its portrait proportions, tightening the scene around the architectural bay, statue, and walking figure. An Upright perspective correction straightens the columns and horizontal courses, giving the façade a formal, graphic structure. This orderly background makes the worker’s movement across the lower frame feel more deliberate. Inference: the crop placement was chosen to connect the bright figure below with the sculpture above while removing peripheral street distractions.
Light and tone
Exposure was raised slightly (+0.30), but highlights and whites were reduced while shadows were opened strongly. This reveals folds in the statue and detail in the worker’s dark clothing without making the pale columns or sculpture overly bright. Added contrast and reduced blacks restore separation after the shadow lift. The custom tone curve is especially important: it raises the deepest black output from 0 to 37 and caps the brightest output below pure white, producing the softened, matte endpoints visible in the finished image. The result is controlled midtone contrast with neither hard black nor brilliant white clipping.
Color palette
A custom 4650 K white balance with a slight magenta tint establishes a relatively neutral-to-cool foundation, while the HSL edits build a deliberate warm-versus-cool palette. Blue saturation is reduced heavily (-66) and blue luminance raised, turning the lower wall, pavement, and architectural grays into lighter, subdued blue-gray tones. Yellow is shifted toward orange, darkened, and desaturated, preventing the safety vest from becoming an overpowering neon patch. Reds and oranges receive more saturation, with red shifted strongly toward orange; this emphasizes the worker’s hat, shoes, and other warm accents against the muted façade. Greens are also redirected and slightly desaturated, minimizing incidental green color. Inference: these targeted adjustments were intended to make the warm moving subject stand out while preserving an understated architectural background.
Tonal color treatment
The shadows receive a subtle cyan-blue split tone at hue 210 and saturation 20. This reinforces the cool cast in the pavement, lower wall, and darker clothing while contrasting with the orange-brown stone and the worker’s warm accessories. Individual RGB curves also introduce small channel differences through the tonal range, supporting the stylized cool-shadow treatment without applying broad global saturation.
Detail and cleanup
Sharpening is moderate at 40 with a standard radius, preserving edges in the carved stone, clothing, and masonry without an exaggerated crispness; Texture, Clarity, and Dehaze remain neutral. Color noise reduction is set to 25, while luminance noise reduction is absent. The ISO 800 capture context makes color-noise cleanup useful, but retaining luminance texture helps the stone and pavement avoid an overly smoothed appearance. Automatic lateral chromatic-aberration correction is enabled, although a full lens-profile correction is not.
Retouching and effects
Multiple healing spots and a painted healing path were used to remove small distractions in the architecture and lower part of the frame. These edits support the clean, geometric presentation rather than changing the scene’s overall structure. No vignette or grain was added, so subject emphasis comes from composition, tonal contrast, and color separation rather than edge darkening or simulated film texture.
What mattered most
- A raised black point and lowered white endpoint create the soft, matte tonal finish.
- Shadow recovery preserves detail, while darker blacks and moderate contrast keep the image from looking flat.
- Strong blue desaturation quiets the architecture; enhanced red-orange accents direct attention to the worker.
- Cool shadow toning strengthens the visual contrast between the blue-gray street and warm masonry.
- Crop, Upright correction, and careful healing make the background feel formal and uncluttered.
