Note on Looks
Looks are not included in the default downloadable preset. The reason is that they often require extra files installed on your system (e.g. many film emulation packs).
Without these files in place, the presets downloaded from PixelPeeper couldn't be imported. That's why PixelPeeper presets focus on universal settings. If you want to replicate the Look part, you can copy it manually, but in many cases, it won't have an effect without the looks installed on your computer first.
The "Full XMP Settings" version of the downloadable preset will include the look and other (complete) adjustments. If you have the required looks installed, you should be able to import this XMP file to Lightroom.

How this look was made
The photograph was shaped into a muted, film-like urban scene with compressed contrast, softly lifted blacks, restrained color, and prominent grain. Strong highlight recovery protects the overcast sky and wet pavement, while raised shadows preserve detail in the dark storefront and buildings. Selective desaturation leaves the pedestrians—especially the pink clothing—as the main color accents.
Overall look
The edit favors a subdued documentary mood rather than crisp, high-impact contrast. Exposure is lowered slightly, the tonal extremes are compressed, and most environmental colors are heavily muted. No added Clarity, Texture, or Dehaze means reflections and wet surfaces remain relatively soft instead of becoming aggressively defined.
Light and tone
Highlights are reduced strongly (-72) and Whites are lowered (-37), controlling the pale sky, reflective pavement, and bright building façades. At the same time, Shadows are raised substantially (+68) and Blacks are lifted (+24), revealing the storefront interior and shadowed architecture. The custom tone curve raises the black point while gently reshaping the midtones and upper tones, producing faded blacks without making the entire image look flat. The slight exposure reduction (-0.35) keeps the rainy scene appropriately dim and helps balance the extensive shadow recovery.
Color
Yellow, blue, green, and orange saturation are selectively reduced—yellow most strongly at -73, followed by blue at -56, green at -54, and orange at -48. This drains color from the stone, pavement, sky, vegetation, and much of the architecture while leaving red and magenta untouched. As a result, the pedestrians’ pink clothing remains a visual accent. The RGB curves also introduce subtle color separation: the shadow points lean warmer, while brighter tones lean slightly cooler. This is a reasonable visual inference from the differing red, green, and blue curve shapes rather than from Color Grading, which is unused.
Detail and texture
Moderate sharpening is applied with a standard 1.0 radius and relatively low detail emphasis. There is no sharpening mask, so the sharpening can affect both structural edges and smoother areas. Color noise reduction is set to 25, while luminance noise reduction is absent. The low capture ISO of 125 supports that choice because strong luminance cleanup was likely unnecessary.
Grain and effects
Grain is a major finishing element: Amount 40 with Size 25 and medium Roughness/Frequency gives the clean digital file a visibly textured, analog character. This grain works with the lifted black point and reduced saturation to create the film-like appearance. No vignette was added, so edge darkness comes from the photographed scene rather than a post-crop effect.
Composition
A crop trims the right and bottom edges while retaining the original aspect ratio. This tightens the view around the curved storefront, converging street lines, and central pair of pedestrians. No perspective or rotation correction was applied, so the natural wide-angle architectural convergence from the 28 mm lens remains part of the composition.
What mattered most
- Strong highlight suppression and shadow lifting compress the rainy scene’s dynamic range.
- A lifted black point and custom curve create soft, faded contrast rather than deep blacks.
- Selective HSL desaturation makes the environment nearly monochromatic while preserving pink and red accents.
- Subtle RGB-curve color separation adds warmer shadows and slightly cooler highlights.
- Prominent grain supplies most of the edit’s analog texture; clarity, texture, dehaze, and vignette remain untouched.
