Note on Looks
Looks are not included in the default downloadable preset. The reason is that they often require extra files installed on your system (e.g. many film emulation packs).
Without these files in place, the presets downloaded from PixelPeeper couldn't be imported. That's why PixelPeeper presets focus on universal settings. If you want to replicate the Look part, you can copy it manually, but in many cases, it won't have an effect without the looks installed on your computer first.
The "Full XMP Settings" version of the downloadable preset will include the look and other (complete) adjustments. If you have the required looks installed, you should be able to import this XMP file to Lightroom.

How this look was made
The edit creates a cool, nearly monochrome, high-contrast morning scene. Strong striped sunlight remains bright and graphic, while recovered highlights and opened shadows preserve detail in the white cup and rumpled bedding. Heavy selective desaturation, subtle blue toning, and a gently faded tone curve give the image a restrained, film-like finish rather than a literal black-and-white conversion.
Overall look
The photograph was kept in color but pushed close to monochrome. This preserves faint cool tonal differences in the fabric and shadows while making the repeating bands of light, the cup, and the dark coffee the main visual elements. Adobe Color provides the base rendering, but the subsequent tonal and HSL adjustments largely define the finished style.
Light and tone
Exposure was raised by 0.45 stop, with very strong contrast (+60) and brighter whites (+59), emphasizing the hard sunlight and making the cup stand out. Highlights were pulled down substantially (-66), which helps retain texture in the illuminated bedding and detail along the white cup instead of allowing those areas to become featureless. Shadows were opened (+37), but blacks were deepened (-30), so the shaded folds remain readable while the narrow cast-shadow bands stay bold. The custom curve lifts the absolute black point and slightly lowers the brightest endpoint; in combination with the strong Basic-panel contrast, this produces punchy internal contrast with softened, slightly faded extremes rather than pure black and clipped white.
Color treatment
Most natural color was removed selectively: yellow, orange, and green saturation were reduced especially heavily, with aqua and blue also muted. This explains the almost black-and-white appearance without using Lightroom’s grayscale conversion. A custom white balance of 5050 K with +17 tint helps prevent the neutral bedding from leaning green, while blue split toning at hue 210 was applied subtly to both highlights and shadows. The result is the visible cool blue-gray atmosphere. Vibrance (+15) and a very small global saturation increase (+2) retain subtle separation among the remaining cool tones rather than making the image completely neutral.
Detail and capture context
Moderate sharpening was applied at the default-like radius, with no added Texture, Clarity, or Dehaze. This keeps the cup lettering and fabric creases defined without making the bedding look brittle. Color noise reduction was used, but luminance noise reduction was left at zero; the ISO 200 capture provides little reason for aggressive smoothing. The 90 mm lens at f/2.8 is capture context rather than an edit, but it materially explains the relatively shallow focus and soft falloff around the cup, which the restrained detail controls preserve.
Effects and framing
No grain, vignette, crop, perspective correction, or manual distortion adjustment was added. The graphic composition and diagonal shadow pattern therefore come primarily from the original framing and lighting. Inference: avoiding a vignette lets the natural bands of window light carry the viewer’s eye across the entire frame instead of artificially concentrating attention at the center.
What mattered most
- Strong contrast, bright whites, and deep blacks make the window-blind shadows graphic.
- Highlight recovery and lifted shadows retain texture despite the hard directional light.
- Heavy HSL desaturation creates a near-monochrome image while preserving subtle cool color.
- Blue toning in both highlights and shadows establishes the cohesive blue-gray mood.
- A lifted black point and softened white endpoint add a mild faded-film character without sacrificing midtone contrast.
- Minimal detail and effects processing keeps the result soft, natural, and dependent on the original light.
