Note on Looks
Looks are not included in the default downloadable preset. The reason is that they often require extra files installed on your system (e.g. many film emulation packs).
Without these files in place, the presets downloaded from PixelPeeper couldn't be imported. That's why PixelPeeper presets focus on universal settings. If you want to replicate the Look part, you can copy it manually, but in many cases, it won't have an effect without the looks installed on your computer first.
The "Full XMP Settings" version of the downloadable preset will include the look and other (complete) adjustments. If you have the required looks installed, you should be able to import this XMP file to Lightroom.

How this look was made
The edit creates a bright, pastel, film-like beach scene with compressed contrast, soft atmospheric distance, subdued cool colors, and visible grain. Strong highlight recovery and lifted dark tones preserve detail while keeping the image airy; selective HSL changes mute the sea, sky, and foliage while allowing small warm accents to remain noticeable.
Overall look
The photograph is intentionally low-contrast and slightly faded rather than crisp or deeply saturated. The Adobe Color look provides the starting color response, while the custom curves, restrained global contrast, selective desaturation, and grain create the finished analog-inspired character. No crop or perspective transformation was applied, so the original open composition and natural architectural perspective were retained.
Light and tone
A small exposure lift brightens the frame, but Highlights at -65 and Whites at -25 strongly restrain the pale sky, surf, and building façades. Shadows are opened and Blacks are raised substantially (+23), preventing the people, beach structures, and lower portions of the buildings from becoming heavy silhouettes. The custom tone curve lifts the black point, slightly suppresses darker midtones, and transitions toward nearly normal highlights. This produces faded blacks with enough midtone separation to keep the architecture readable. The modest +7 global contrast adds back a little definition without undoing the soft tonal compression.
Color
The custom white balance is mildly warm with a +10 magenta tint, helping the gray daylight feel less cold or green. Color is controlled mainly through HSL rather than global saturation. Blue saturation is reduced by 65, with green and yellow also strongly reduced, which turns the sky, water, and distant vegetation into quiet gray-cyan and beige tones. Aqua is shifted strongly in hue and given a small saturation increase, refining the restrained water color instead of making it broadly vivid. Red and orange saturation are increased, so people, signs, skin, and warmer architectural details remain visible as small accents against the muted environment. The individual red, green, and blue curves also introduce subtle tonal color variation: the lifted shadows lean slightly cool-magenta, while upper tones receive a delicate warm-magenta bias. This contributes to the film-like palette without conventional split toning or color grading.
Detail and atmosphere
Clarity, Texture, and Dehaze are all left at zero. That is important to the visual intent: misty distance and the soft transition between sky and sea are preserved rather than forced into hard local contrast. Standard sharpening is applied, but without masking or added texture, so edges receive basic definition while the scene remains gentle. The ISO 100 capture required no luminance noise reduction; only standard color-noise reduction is present.
Effects and optical correction
Grain is a major finishing element, set to Amount 40 with moderate size. It adds visible texture to the broad pale areas and reinforces the impression of a scanned or consumer-film photograph. No vignette was added, allowing the bright frame to remain open from edge to edge. The Sony FE 55mm lens profile is enabled for standard distortion and vignetting correction, but chromatic-aberration automation and manual defringing are not active.
Visual inference
Inference: the subdued blues, lifted black point, soft atmospheric rendering, and grain appear designed to evoke an overcast coastal snapshot on color film. The retained warm reds and oranges likely serve as visual anchors, helping the tiny figures and beachfront details stand out without breaking the image’s muted mood.
What mattered most
- Strong highlight and white reduction protects the pale sky, surf, and buildings.
- Opened shadows, raised blacks, and a lifted tone curve create the faded low-contrast foundation.
- Heavy blue, green, and yellow desaturation produces the restrained coastal palette.
- Warm red and orange accents keep small human and architectural details visible.
- Zero Dehaze, Clarity, and Texture preserve the humid atmospheric softness.
- Pronounced grain supplies the final analog-film character.
