Note on Looks
Looks are not included in the default downloadable preset. The reason is that they often require extra files installed on your system (e.g. many film emulation packs).
Without these files in place, the presets downloaded from PixelPeeper couldn't be imported. That's why PixelPeeper presets focus on universal settings. If you want to replicate the Look part, you can copy it manually, but in many cases, it won't have an effect without the looks installed on your computer first.
The "Full XMP Settings" version of the downloadable preset will include the look and other (complete) adjustments. If you have the required looks installed, you should be able to import this XMP file to Lightroom.

How this look was made
The edit creates a moody, film-like environmental portrait: the overall exposure is lifted, but the foliage and clothing remain deep and dramatic, while the purple flowers are selectively emphasized. A matte tone curve, restrained highlights, muted surrounding colors, and strong added grain keep the image from looking bright or digitally polished.
Overall look and composition
A substantial crop tightens the frame around the woman and the wall of flowers, making the repeated blossoms and dark foliage function as a graphic backdrop. Lens-profile correction for the Sony FE 55mm F1.8 ZA was enabled, correcting the lens’s expected distortion and light falloff without additional manual perspective work.
Light and tone
Exposure was raised by 0.80 EV to bring the subject, flowers, and shaded scene to a useful overall brightness. That lift was counterbalanced by strongly reducing Shadows (-69), which keeps the black shirt and dense foliage dark rather than opening every shaded area. Highlights were reduced (-37) and Whites slightly lowered, protecting pale skin, silver hair, and bright flower petals. Blacks were raised (+26), while the custom tone curve lifts the black endpoint and compresses the brightest endpoint. Together these choices produce deep-looking shadows that do not fall to absolute black and highlights that stop short of stark white—the characteristic muted, matte finish visible in the photograph. Slightly reduced global contrast reinforces the softer tonal transitions.
Color and subject separation
The white balance is relatively warm at 6150K with a +10 magenta tint, helping the woman’s skin and hair avoid a cool cast within the green surroundings. Color was shaped mainly through targeted HSL controls rather than global saturation. Purple and magenta saturation were increased substantially, and their luminance was raised, making the rhododendron blossoms brighter and more prominent. Their hues were also shifted, refining the flowers toward the lavender-magenta palette seen here. In contrast, green saturation was reduced while green luminance was raised slightly. This keeps leaf detail visible but makes the foliage less colorful and less competitive. Yellow, blue, aqua, and red were also strongly subdued; orange was reduced more gently to keep skin from becoming overly vivid. The result is selective color contrast: luminous purple flowers and natural skin against restrained, dark greenery. This subject-separation effect is a visual inference supported by the HSL settings and photograph.
Detail and texture
Moderate sharpening was applied with a 1.0 radius and standard detail, but no masking. There is no luminance noise reduction, while standard color-noise reduction remains at 25. The ISO 100 capture would not normally require aggressive noise cleanup, which makes the absence of luminance smoothing appropriate for retaining fine hair, fabric, and leaf texture.
Film-like effects
Grain is a major stylistic component: Amount 40 with a relatively small Size 25 and medium Roughness/Frequency. This overlays a clearly visible but fine texture across skin, clothing, and foliage, reducing the clean digital character of the low-ISO file and supporting the matte tonal treatment. No post-crop vignette, dehaze, clarity, texture, split toning, or color grading was added, so the atmosphere comes primarily from the tone curve, selective HSL work, and grain rather than heavy local-contrast or edge-darkening effects.
What mattered most
- Exposure was lifted, then deep shadows and restrained highlights rebuilt the scene’s moody tonal structure.
- The custom curve creates lifted blacks and compressed whites for a matte, film-like finish.
- Purple and magenta flowers were enhanced while greens, yellows, blues, and aquas were muted to focus attention on the subject and blossoms.
- Strong fine grain supplies the principal finishing texture; clarity, dehaze, vignetting, and color grading were left neutral.
