Note on Looks
Looks are not included in the default downloadable preset. The reason is that they often require extra files installed on your system (e.g. many film emulation packs).
Without these files in place, the presets downloaded from PixelPeeper couldn't be imported. That's why PixelPeeper presets focus on universal settings. If you want to replicate the Look part, you can copy it manually, but in many cases, it won't have an effect without the looks installed on your computer first.
The "Full XMP Settings" version of the downloadable preset will include the look and other (complete) adjustments. If you have the required looks installed, you should be able to import this XMP file to Lightroom.

How this look was made
The edit creates a subdued, slightly matte cityscape with controlled sky brightness, opened architectural shadows, and deliberately muted greens, yellows, and blues. Rather than adding punch or atmospheric drama, it compresses the tonal range and keeps the distant Rome skyline soft and restrained.
Overall look
The finished image has a low-key, muted character. A small exposure reduction combines with strong highlight and white recovery, lifted shadows, and a custom curve that raises the black floor and lowers the brightest endpoint. This produces soft blacks, restrained whites, and less overall brilliance while preserving the dome and surrounding buildings as the visual focus.
Light and tone
Highlights were reduced very strongly (-80) and Whites lowered, which holds detail in the overcast sky and prevents pale rooftops and façades from becoming too bright. Shadows were raised and Blacks increased, revealing detail in the foreground trees and darker architecture. The custom tone curve further lifts the deepest tones and compresses the top end, creating the noticeable matte finish. A slight contrast increase adds some separation back after this broad tonal compression.
Color
White balance is set near neutral daylight with a slight magenta tint, keeping the gray sky from becoming strongly blue or green. The strongest creative color work is selective desaturation: blue and green saturation are each reduced by about half, while yellow is also substantially reduced. This makes the sky, foliage, stone, and rooftops feel cohesive and understated. Green hue is shifted toward aqua, so the foreground vegetation appears cooler and less lush. Reds and oranges remain largely untouched, allowing the warm masonry and dome details to stand out gently against the muted surroundings.
Detail and atmosphere
No Texture, Clarity, or Dehaze was added, so distant atmospheric softness and the smooth overcast sky are retained rather than made crisp or dramatic. Moderate global sharpening supplies basic edge definition without masking. Color noise reduction is applied, but luminance noise reduction is absent; the ISO 100 capture provides useful context for why aggressive luminance smoothing was unnecessary.
Lens correction and cleanup
The Adobe profile for the Sony FE 55mm F1.8 ZA is enabled at full distortion and vignetting correction, helping keep architectural lines and illumination natural. No manual perspective correction or crop was used. A single small healing correction near the upper part of the frame appears intended to remove a minor spot or distraction from the otherwise plain sky; this is a reasonable visual inference from the heal coordinates.
What mattered most
- The look depends mainly on tonal compression: darker exposure and recovered highlights paired with lifted shadows and blacks.
- A raised black point and lowered white endpoint create the soft, matte rendering.
- Heavy blue, green, and yellow desaturation gives the cityscape its quiet, cohesive palette.
- Leaving Clarity, Texture, and Dehaze at zero preserves natural distance and atmospheric softness.
- Warm architectural colors remain comparatively intact, helping the dome and masonry separate from the cool, muted foliage and sky.
