Note on Looks
Looks are not included in the default downloadable preset. The reason is that they often require extra files installed on your system (e.g. many film emulation packs).
Without these files in place, the presets downloaded from PixelPeeper couldn't be imported. That's why PixelPeeper presets focus on universal settings. If you want to replicate the Look part, you can copy it manually, but in many cases, it won't have an effect without the looks installed on your computer first.
The "Full XMP Settings" version of the downloadable preset will include the look and other (complete) adjustments. If you have the required looks installed, you should be able to import this XMP file to Lightroom.

How this look was made
The edit creates a muted, atmospheric coastal landscape with soft fog, restrained earth colors, cool cyan-blue water and sky, and a gently faded tonal finish. Strong highlight recovery preserves the bright mist, while lifted shadows and blacks reveal the cliffs without making the scene look harsh. The lack of clarity, dehaze, and texture adjustments is central to keeping the fog soft and natural.
Light and tone
Exposure was raised slightly (+0.29), but highlights were pulled down strongly (-77) to retain gradation in the bright sky and fog. Shadows were opened substantially (+50), and the Blacks setting was raised to +60, revealing more detail in the dark foreground and cliff faces. A custom tone curve lifts the black point and slightly lowers the white endpoint, producing the faded, compressed finish rather than deep blacks and brilliant whites. The small contrast increase (+7) adds enough separation to keep the coastline readable despite this tonal compression. Inference: the capture’s -1 EV exposure compensation likely helped preserve the luminous mist and sky, after which the edit restored darker terrain through shadow and black adjustments.
Color treatment
A custom white balance of 5850 K with a slight magenta tint keeps the scene from becoming excessively cold or green. Vibrance is raised modestly (+15), but targeted HSL reductions strongly mute yellow, green, and orange, with a smaller reduction in blue. This combination preserves some color presence in the sky and sea while turning the vegetation and rock into subdued olive-brown tones. Hue shifts move yellow and green away from their default rendering and shift blue slightly, helping create the cool cyan water and sky seen in the finished image. The individual red, green, and blue tone curves add subtle channel-specific color shaping, reinforcing the cool atmospheric character without overt split toning or color grading.
Atmosphere and local contrast
Clarity, Texture, and Dehaze are all left at zero. This is visually important: the fog remains smooth and luminous, distant landforms recede naturally, and the water is not forced into an overly crisp or dramatic rendering. The image’s depth comes primarily from natural atmospheric perspective and tonal separation rather than aggressive microcontrast.
Detail and noise
Sharpening is moderate at 40 with a 1.0 radius and low detail emphasis. No masking is applied, so sharpening affects the frame broadly, but the conservative settings avoid making the fog look gritty. Color noise reduction is set to the standard 25, while luminance noise reduction is zero. That restraint fits the clean ISO 100 capture and helps retain natural fine detail in the cliffs and water.
Composition and effects
The crop removes roughly 14% from the right and bottom while retaining the original aspect relationship, shifting emphasis toward the left-hand cliffs, winding shoreline, and open fog above the sea. No vignette, grain, lens-profile correction, manual distortion correction, or defringing was added. The finished appearance therefore relies on the crop, tonal compression, and selective color control rather than conspicuous effects.
What mattered most
- Strong highlight recovery protects the bright fog and sky.
- Lifted shadows, raised blacks, and the custom curve create an open, matte tonal range.
- Heavy desaturation of yellows, greens, and oranges gives the cliffs their restrained olive-brown palette.
- Cool blues remain present but subdued, supporting the misty coastal mood.
- Leaving Dehaze, Clarity, and Texture at zero preserves the photograph’s natural softness and atmospheric depth.
