Note on Looks
Looks are not included in the default downloadable preset. The reason is that they often require extra files installed on your system (e.g. many film emulation packs).
Without these files in place, the presets downloaded from PixelPeeper couldn't be imported. That's why PixelPeeper presets focus on universal settings. If you want to replicate the Look part, you can copy it manually, but in many cases, it won't have an effect without the looks installed on your computer first.
The "Full XMP Settings" version of the downloadable preset will include the look and other (complete) adjustments. If you have the required looks installed, you should be able to import this XMP file to Lightroom.

How this look was made
The edit creates a subdued, film-like coastal street scene: open shadows, restrained highlights, faded endpoints, muted architecture and foliage, and cool cyan-blue atmosphere. The soft haze is preserved rather than clarified, while added grain gives the clean low-ISO capture a more tactile, analog finish.
Overall look
The image is intentionally low in hard contrast and color intensity. Mist over the mountain and the pale sky remain soft, while the road, houses, and vegetation retain enough separation to guide the eye toward the center. Adobe Color provides the base rendering, but the custom curves and selective desaturation do most of the stylistic work.
Light and tone
Exposure was raised by +0.80, while Highlights were reduced to -57 and Whites to -27. Shadows were opened strongly at +63, and Blacks were raised at +27. Together, these adjustments brighten the street and shaded buildings without letting the foggy sky become harsh. The custom tone curve further lifts the black point and lowers the brightest endpoint, producing soft, grayish blacks and compressed whites rather than a crisp digital range. A small Contrast increase prevents the lifted tones from becoming completely flat. Inference: the capture’s -0.7 EV exposure compensation likely helped retain the bright overcast sky, after which the Lightroom adjustments redistributed that tonal range into the darker foreground.
Color treatment
The custom white balance uses a positive magenta tint, countering some of the natural green cast common in overcast vegetation and haze. Individual RGB curves then introduce subtle color separation: shadows lean cool, and upper tones receive a cyan/green influence. This is visible in the pale blue-green sky and the cool atmospheric haze, while the distant mountain takes on a muted mauve quality. Selective HSL reductions are substantial—blue, orange, yellow, and green are all desaturated—so cars, houses, lawns, and palms do not compete for attention. Green Hue is shifted +24 toward aqua, helping the foliage integrate with the cool palette instead of appearing brightly yellow-green. Reds and magentas are largely left alone, allowing restrained warm and purplish accents to survive against the cooler scene.
Atmosphere and detail
Clarity, Texture, and Dehaze are all left at zero. This is important to the result: the edit does not force definition into the fog or exaggerate edges in the buildings and trees. Standard sharpening is applied at a moderate amount, with no masking, preserving basic structure without creating an aggressively crisp look. Because the photograph was captured at ISO 100, no luminance noise reduction was needed; standard color-noise reduction handles minor chroma artifacts without smoothing away detail.
Grain and finish
Grain is a prominent finishing choice, with Amount 40 and a relatively small Size of 25. It adds visible texture across the smooth sky, road, and building surfaces, making the image feel less clinically digital and reinforcing the muted film aesthetic. No post-crop vignette was added, so attention is directed primarily through the street’s natural perspective rather than artificial edge darkening.
Composition
A moderate crop trims more from the left and top than from the other edges. This reduces peripheral architecture and excess sky while retaining the central road, parked vehicles, palms, and utility pole. The resulting composition strengthens the road as a leading line into the hazy mountain and keeps the tall palms as vertical anchors.
What mattered most
- The faded appearance comes mainly from lifted blacks, compressed whites, and a custom tone curve—not from reduced global contrast alone.
- Strong highlight recovery and shadow opening balance the pale sky with the shaded street.
- Selective desaturation and RGB curves create the cool cyan, muted-green, slightly mauve palette.
- Leaving Dehaze, Clarity, and Texture untouched preserves the natural coastal mist.
- Added grain supplies the analog texture that the clean ISO 100 capture would not naturally have.
