Note on Looks
Looks are not included in the default downloadable preset. The reason is that they often require extra files installed on your system (e.g. many film emulation packs).
Without these files in place, the presets downloaded from PixelPeeper couldn't be imported. That's why PixelPeeper presets focus on universal settings. If you want to replicate the Look part, you can copy it manually, but in many cases, it won't have an effect without the looks installed on your computer first.
The "Full XMP Settings" version of the downloadable preset will include the look and other (complete) adjustments. If you have the required looks installed, you should be able to import this XMP file to Lightroom.

How this look was made
The edit creates a subdued, hazy coastal scene with softly lifted shadows, restrained highlights, muted blue and yellow color, and a pronounced film-like grain. The result feels atmospheric rather than crisp or highly saturated, with the small sailboat remaining the visual anchor against broad bands of beach, water, and pastel sky.
Overall look
The Adobe Color look provides the base rendering, but the custom curves and selective color reductions push it toward a muted, slightly faded aesthetic. Clarity, Texture, Dehaze, global Saturation, and Vibrance were left neutral, so the photograph retains the naturally soft, misty character visible across the distant water and skyline rather than gaining artificial crispness.
Light and tone
Exposure was raised by half a stop to open the dim scene. Highlights were pulled down substantially (-46) while Shadows were lifted (+30), preserving the pale sky and making the dark beach more readable. Whites were then raised (+23), which keeps the sail and brighter parts of the sky from becoming dull. A small Contrast increase adds separation between the horizontal layers. The custom master tone curve lifts the black endpoint and compresses the brightest endpoint, producing the faded, low-glare blacks and softened whites that give the image its filmic quality.
Color
White balance is relatively warm at 5900K, but the unusually strong greenward Tint setting (-23) counteracts magenta and encourages the cool cyan-green cast in the water and haze. The individual red, green, and blue curves introduce further subtle color separation; inference: their differing midtone and upper-tone shapes help create the pink-lilac upper sky against the cooler turquoise horizon. Blue saturation was reduced by 14, preventing the water and haze from becoming vivid, while yellow saturation was reduced heavily (-36) and yellow luminance raised (+24). This makes sand and other yellowish areas paler and less colorful, supporting the subdued palette. No color grading or split toning was added.
Composition and geometry
The frame was rotated by roughly one degree and cropped, mainly from the right and bottom, to level the shoreline and refine the balance between the sailboat, open water, and pier. Upright correction and the matching Sony 55mm lens profile were enabled, helping keep the pier and horizon geometry controlled while correcting the lens’s native distortion and vignetting.
Detail and effects
Sharpening is moderate, with no edge masking, so it adds some definition throughout rather than isolating only strong edges. Color noise reduction is applied at the standard level, while luminance noise reduction is absent; at ISO 160, heavy luminance smoothing was not necessary. Grain is a major stylistic choice: an amount of 30 with a large size of 60 and fairly high roughness adds visible, coarse texture across the smooth sky and dark foreground. Inference: this grain deliberately replaces digital cleanliness with an older, atmospheric film character.
What mattered most
- Lifted blacks and compressed highlights create the faded tonal foundation.
- Highlight recovery and shadow lifting preserve detail across the pale sky and dark beach.
- Reduced blue and yellow saturation keeps the coastal palette quiet and misty.
- The warm temperature, greenward tint, and RGB curves help separate the pink-lilac sky from the cyan horizon.
- Large, noticeable grain is central to the finished film-like appearance.
