Note on Looks
Looks are not included in the default downloadable preset. The reason is that they often require extra files installed on your system (e.g. many film emulation packs).
Without these files in place, the presets downloaded from PixelPeeper couldn't be imported. That's why PixelPeeper presets focus on universal settings. If you want to replicate the Look part, you can copy it manually, but in many cases, it won't have an effect without the looks installed on your computer first.
The "Full XMP Settings" version of the downloadable preset will include the look and other (complete) adjustments. If you have the required looks installed, you should be able to import this XMP file to Lightroom.

How this look was made
The edit creates a restrained, slightly matte cityscape with controlled midday contrast and subdued color. Strong highlight recovery and shadow lifting preserve detail across bright rooftops and dark building faces, while the custom curve softens both black and white endpoints. Broad and selective desaturation make the skyline feel cool, architectural, and understated rather than vivid.
Overall look
The photograph is shaped into a muted, cool-toned urban scene. Adobe Color supplies the starting rendering, but overall saturation is reduced by 22 and several individual color families are desaturated much more heavily. The result emphasizes building geometry, density, and tonal structure over colorful signage or foliage.
Light and tone
The slight exposure reduction of 0.11 EV keeps the bright daytime scene contained. Highlights are pulled down strongly at -67 and whites by -16, preserving cloud texture, pale rooftops, and reflective façades. Shadows are raised by +52 and blacks by +29, opening detail in the darker towers without making the image conventionally bright. A small contrast increase of +7 restores some separation after this compression. The custom point curve lifts the black endpoint substantially and lowers the brightest endpoint slightly, producing the softened, matte boundaries visible in the deepest shadows and brightest sky. Together, the Basic adjustments recover local information while the curve gives that information a flatter, more stylized tonal finish.
Color
The custom white balance of 4950K with +12 tint keeps the scene from becoming excessively cold or green. Color is then simplified aggressively: blue saturation is reduced by 57, green by 67, yellow by 52, and aqua by 20. This suppresses strong sky, water, vegetation, and city-color accents. Blue and aqua luminance are raised by 20 and 15, respectively, helping the sky and lake remain airy despite their reduced saturation. Blue hue is shifted by -24 and aqua by +10, subtly reorganizing the blue-cyan relationship rather than leaving a single intense blue field. The RGB curves are nearly matched, with only a small blue-channel difference through darker midtones; visually, this supports a very restrained color bias rather than obvious split toning. No color grading or split toning was added.
Detail
Sharpening is moderate at 40 with a 1.0 radius and 25 detail, supporting the fine windows and building edges without an especially hard or gritty treatment. Color noise reduction is set to 25, while luminance noise reduction is zero. The ISO 100 capture provides useful context: the clean file likely required little luminance smoothing, allowing architectural detail to remain intact.
Composition and effects
The frame is rotated by roughly one degree and trimmed slightly from both sides, likely to refine the horizon and edge placement while retaining the wide skyline composition. This is a reasonable visual inference from the crop data. There is no added vignette, grain, clarity, texture, or dehaze, so the finished atmosphere comes primarily from tonal compression, the matte curve, and selective desaturation rather than presence or effects controls. Lens profile correction and automatic lateral chromatic-aberration correction were not enabled.
What mattered most
- Strong highlight recovery and shadow lifting retain detail throughout the high-contrast skyline.
- A lifted black point and lowered white endpoint create the soft, matte tonal boundaries.
- Heavy global and selective desaturation produces the restrained architectural palette.
- Raised blue and aqua luminance keeps the lake and sky light even after their color is subdued.
- Minimal noise reduction and moderate sharpening preserve fine building detail.
