Note on Looks
Looks are not included in the default downloadable preset. The reason is that they often require extra files installed on your system (e.g. many film emulation packs).
Without these files in place, the presets downloaded from PixelPeeper couldn't be imported. That's why PixelPeeper presets focus on universal settings. If you want to replicate the Look part, you can copy it manually, but in many cases, it won't have an effect without the looks installed on your computer first.
The "Full XMP Settings" version of the downloadable preset will include the look and other (complete) adjustments. If you have the required looks installed, you should be able to import this XMP file to Lightroom.

How this look was made
The edit creates a muted, film-like coastal scene with a bright but compressed sky, open shadow detail, subdued colors, and conspicuous coarse grain. The warning sign remains the clearest graphic element, while the rocks, vegetation, water, and clouds are unified by a restrained blue-green-gray palette.
Overall look
Adobe Color provides the starting rendering, but the custom tone and RGB curves substantially soften it. Raised blacks, compressed highlights, broad desaturation, and large grain produce a weathered analog character rather than a clean digital finish. The modest global contrast increase and added clarity preserve enough structure for the sign, rocks, and vegetation to stand apart within that softened tonal range.
Light and tone
Exposure was raised by a substantial +1.05 EV, bringing the overcast landscape into a brighter register. To keep that lift from washing out the cloudy sky, Highlights were reduced to -55 and Whites to -23. Shadows were opened strongly to +59, revealing the dark rocks and shoreline plants, while Blacks at +8 further reduce deep clipping. The custom tone curve reinforces the matte treatment: its black endpoint is lifted markedly and its white endpoint is lowered, compressing both extremes. This interaction explains why the image can feel bright and detailed without having brilliant whites or truly solid blacks.
Color
A custom white balance of 7300 K adds warmth, while Tint at -6 introduces a slight green bias. Most individual color families were then heavily desaturated: orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and magenta are all reduced, with purple and magenta cut by more than 80 points. Aqua and blue are also restrained, keeping the sea and sky gray-blue rather than vivid. Red is the exception, receiving a small saturation increase, which helps any faint warm accents survive the otherwise broad color suppression. Custom red, green, and blue curves add subtle channel separation; a reasonable visual inference is that they help produce cooler deep tones and gently warmer upper midtones, contributing to the understated cross-processed feel.
Detail and texture
Clarity at +14 adds localized edge contrast around the sign lettering, rock surfaces, and vegetation without the harsher atmospheric effect of Dehaze, which remains at zero. Sharpening is moderate and uses no masking, so it affects both subject edges and fine background texture. Color noise reduction is applied at 25, but luminance noise reduction is absent. The ISO 640 capture provides relevant context: some natural luminance texture may remain, though the dominant texture is intentionally added grain.
Grain and finishing effects
Grain is a defining part of the finish: Amount 33 with a large Size of 60 creates clearly visible, coarse texture across the smooth sky and water. This works with the lifted black point and subdued palette to simulate a scanned or high-speed film appearance. No post-crop vignette was added, so attention is guided primarily by the central sign, tonal contrast, and composition rather than darkened corners.
Crop and alignment
The frame was rotated by about 1.25 degrees and trimmed slightly from both sides. This likely serves to level the waterline while keeping the warning sign near the central vertical axis. No perspective correction or lens-profile correction was enabled.
What mattered most
- A strong exposure lift was balanced by highlight recovery, lowered whites, and a compressed tone curve.
- Lifted blacks and opened shadows create the soft, matte dynamic range.
- Heavy selective desaturation produces the restrained gray-blue-green coastal palette.
- Moderate clarity maintains definition despite the softened tones.
- Large added grain is central to the intentionally weathered, film-like finish.
