Note on Looks
Looks are not included in the default downloadable preset. The reason is that they often require extra files installed on your system (e.g. many film emulation packs).
Without these files in place, the presets downloaded from PixelPeeper couldn't be imported. That's why PixelPeeper presets focus on universal settings. If you want to replicate the Look part, you can copy it manually, but in many cases, it won't have an effect without the looks installed on your computer first.
The "Full XMP Settings" version of the downloadable preset will include the look and other (complete) adjustments. If you have the required looks installed, you should be able to import this XMP file to Lightroom.

How this look was made
The edit creates a subdued, film-like cityscape with compressed highlights, open shadows, muted cool colors, and clearly visible grain. Rather than cutting through the atmospheric haze, it preserves the soft recession of the skyline while giving the foreground buildings enough tonal structure to remain legible.
Overall look
The image is intentionally restrained rather than clean and vivid. The Adobe Standard camera profile provides the base rendering, while the recorded Adobe Color look contributes its own tonal/color response. Broad saturation is unchanged and Vibrance is raised slightly, but strong HSL reductions selectively suppress most individual color families. This produces a mostly neutral, gray-blue urban palette without making the photograph monochrome.
Light and tone
Exposure is lowered slightly, while Highlights are reduced very strongly (-75) and Whites are pulled down. This controls the bright, hazy sky and keeps it from dominating the frame. Shadows are lifted substantially (+39), with Blacks also raised, revealing detail across the dense foreground architecture. A small Contrast increase restores some separation after that tonal compression. The custom tone curve reinforces the treatment: its raised black endpoint gives the deepest tones a faded, matte floor, while its lowered white endpoint softens the brightest values. The result is compressed dynamic range with firm midtone building definition but no hard white or black extremes.
Atmosphere and local contrast
Clarity receives only a slight increase, adding modest edge definition to the nearby buildings. Texture and Dehaze are left at zero, so the edit does not try to remove the visible atmospheric haze. This helps distant skyscrapers dissolve naturally into the pale background and preserves the sense of depth. The photograph was captured at ISO 100 and f/10, which supports the relatively clean structural detail and broad depth of field; these are capture characteristics, not Lightroom adjustments.
Color
The custom white balance of 5600K with a small magenta tint keeps the scene from becoming excessively cyan or green. Blues are shifted slightly in hue, brightened, and heavily desaturated, making the sky and distant haze pale and understated. Aqua, green, yellow, purple, and magenta are also reduced substantially, while orange is softened only slightly and red is essentially retained. A small Vibrance increase helps preserve weaker remaining colors despite these selective reductions. The individual RGB curves subtly lift color channels in the shadows; because red and green are raised more than blue in the darker range, they likely contribute a faint warm or yellowish cast to the matte shadows. This is a visual inference from the curve shapes.
Detail and noise
Moderate sharpening is applied with a standard 1.0 radius and low detail emphasis. Masking is at zero, so sharpening can affect both architectural edges and smoother areas such as the sky. No luminance noise reduction is used, which is reasonable given the ISO 100 capture and also avoids smoothing away the intentionally textured finish. Standard color noise reduction remains active to suppress small chroma speckles.
Effects and finishing
A relatively strong Grain amount of 40 is the main finishing effect. Its moderate size and frequency give the pale sky and building surfaces an analog texture, helping unify the muted palette and softened tonal endpoints. There is no added vignette, crop, perspective correction, distortion correction, or dehazing, so the original framing and natural architectural convergence remain intact.
What mattered most
- Strong highlight recovery and lowered whites preserve the bright hazy sky.
- Lifted shadows, raised blacks, and the custom curve create open architectural detail with a matte black floor.
- Selective HSL desaturation—especially in blue—produces the subdued gray-blue palette.
- Minimal Clarity and no Dehaze preserve atmospheric depth instead of forcing crispness into the distant skyline.
- Heavy grain supplies the deliberately film-like final texture.
