Note on Looks
Looks are not included in the default downloadable preset. The reason is that they often require extra files installed on your system (e.g. many film emulation packs).
Without these files in place, the presets downloaded from PixelPeeper couldn't be imported. That's why PixelPeeper presets focus on universal settings. If you want to replicate the Look part, you can copy it manually, but in many cases, it won't have an effect without the looks installed on your computer first.
The "Full XMP Settings" version of the downloadable preset will include the look and other (complete) adjustments. If you have the required looks installed, you should be able to import this XMP file to Lightroom.

How this look was made
The edit creates a restrained, slightly matte cityscape with compressed highlights, open shadows, subdued cool colors, and selectively stronger warm building tones. The result suits the overcast waterfront scene: cloud detail is retained, the skyline remains readable, and the palette feels muted rather than vivid.
Overall look
Adobe Standard provides the base rendering, with Adobe Color look metadata also present. The treatment is intentionally understated: overall saturation is reduced, contrast is controlled, and the tonal endpoints are softened. Inference: this gives the skyline a subdued, mildly film-like documentary character rather than a crisp, highly saturated architectural look.
Light and tone
Exposure is essentially unchanged at -0.05, so the look comes primarily from tonal redistribution. Highlights are pulled down strongly (-69) and whites are reduced (-28), preserving texture in the bright overcast sky and preventing pale façades from becoming harsh. Shadows are raised (+35), while Blacks at +27 and the custom curve’s lifted black point create softer, grayish deepest tones. A small contrast increase (+10) and Clarity (+9) restore separation and building definition after that compression. The curve also lowers the brightest endpoint, reinforcing the muted, non-brilliant highlight finish.
Color
The custom white balance is a neutral daylight-like 5350 K with no tint shift, keeping the cloudy scene cool but not strongly blue. Global saturation is reduced by 14. HSL then makes the desaturation selective: blues, aquas, greens, yellows, purples, and magentas are all reduced, which quiets the sky, water, and incidental city colors. Reds and oranges are increased instead, with red hue shifted toward orange and yellow shifted slightly toward green. This lets brick, rust, and warm façades remain visible against the subdued cool environment. The RGB curves add subtle channel-specific shaping; inference: their stronger blue response near the upper tones helps maintain a faintly cool cast in the bright sky while the warmer HSL adjustments preserve separation in the buildings.
Detail and optical correction
Moderate sharpening uses Amount 40, Radius 1.0, and Detail 25, adding clean edge definition without aggressive micro-detail. No sharpening mask is applied, so the effect also reaches the sky and water. Color noise reduction is set to 25, while luminance noise reduction is zero. The ISO 100 capture materially supports that choice because little luminance smoothing should be necessary. The matching Adobe lens profile for the Sony FE 55mm F1.8 ZA is enabled to correct the lens’s distortion and natural edge shading.
Effects and composition
There is no crop, geometric transform, added vignette, grain, or dehaze. Keeping dehaze at zero preserves the natural atmospheric softness of the cloudy skyline, while the modest clarity adjustment supplies enough local contrast to stop the buildings from looking completely flat.
What mattered most
- Strong highlight recovery and reduced whites protect the overcast sky.
- Raised shadows and a lifted black point produce the soft, matte tonal floor.
- Broad desaturation quiets the scene, while boosted reds and oranges keep warm architecture distinct.
- Modest clarity and sharpening restore structure without turning the image into a hard-edged architectural rendering.
- No grain, vignette, crop, or dehaze was used; the finish relies mainly on tone curves and selective color control.
