Note on Looks
Looks are not included in the default downloadable preset. The reason is that they often require extra files installed on your system (e.g. many film emulation packs).
Without these files in place, the presets downloaded from PixelPeeper couldn't be imported. That's why PixelPeeper presets focus on universal settings. If you want to replicate the Look part, you can copy it manually, but in many cases, it won't have an effect without the looks installed on your computer first.
The "Full XMP Settings" version of the downloadable preset will include the look and other (complete) adjustments. If you have the required looks installed, you should be able to import this XMP file to Lightroom.

How this look was made
The edit creates a muted, slightly matte urban-film look while keeping the red storefronts, signs, and façade visually dominant. Strong highlight recovery and lifted shadows compress the street’s wide brightness range, while a custom curve softens both black and white endpoints. Selective color desaturation, restrained sharpening, added grain, perspective correction, and a tighter crop complete the graphic documentary treatment.
Overall look
The image is intentionally restrained rather than vivid or highly crisp. The Adobe Standard camera profile is paired with an Adobe Color look, then shaped through a custom tone curve and selective HSL adjustments. Global saturation, vibrance, contrast, clarity, texture, and dehaze remain neutral, so the character comes primarily from tonal compression, selective color, and grain.
Light and tone
Exposure is essentially unchanged, indicating that the original overall brightness was already close to the intended level. Highlights are reduced strongly to -72, preserving detail in the bright sky and pale upper buildings. Shadows are raised to +51 and Blacks to +27, opening the shaded storefronts and street without making them look harsh. Whites at +19 restore some brightness after the highlight compression. The custom point curve lifts the black endpoint and lowers the white endpoint, producing the softly faded blacks and subdued brightest whites associated with a matte film rendering.
Color
A custom white balance of 5250 K with +9 tint gives the neutral masonry and sky a slightly warm, magenta-leaning balance rather than a cold digital appearance. Most color families are heavily muted: green and yellow are reduced by roughly 60 points, blue by 47, and aqua, purple, and magenta are also pulled back. Red is the exception, boosted by +20 saturation, which makes the red building, awnings, and shop signs stand out against the subdued surroundings. Small hue shifts in green, yellow, red, and blue further refine those urban colors without changing their luminance. The RGB curves are not identical, so there is also a subtle channel-based color shaping; visually, its effect is secondary to the stronger HSL desaturation.
Composition and geometry
A crop trims the frame, especially from the top and right, tightening attention around the street corridor, central pedestrians, water tower, and opposing façades. Upright perspective correction was applied to reduce the converging verticals typical of looking through a narrow street with a 35 mm lens. This helps the building edges feel more orderly while retaining the depth of the alley.
Detail and effects
Sharpening is moderate at 40 with a standard 1.0 radius and low detail emphasis. There is no luminance noise reduction, while standard color noise reduction is applied. Grain is deliberately added at Amount 30 and Size 30, giving the smooth sky, walls, and shadow areas a more tactile, analog texture. Inference: because the photograph was captured at ISO 100, the visible grain is primarily a stylistic addition rather than a response to significant capture noise.
What mattered most
