Note on Looks
Looks are not included in the default downloadable preset. The reason is that they often require extra files installed on your system (e.g. many film emulation packs).
Without these files in place, the presets downloaded from PixelPeeper couldn't be imported. That's why PixelPeeper presets focus on universal settings. If you want to replicate the Look part, you can copy it manually, but in many cases, it won't have an effect without the looks installed on your computer first.
The "Full XMP Settings" version of the downloadable preset will include the look and other (complete) adjustments. If you have the required looks installed, you should be able to import this XMP file to Lightroom.

How this look was made
The edit creates a restrained, slightly faded film-like city scene. Strong highlight and shadow recovery preserves detail across the bright sky, reflective water, dark skyline, and foreground wall, while selective color desaturation and added grain keep the image subdued rather than polished or vivid. The crop and perspective correction organize the skyline around the seated figure.
Composition and geometry
A substantial crop removes much of the left side and some of the bottom while retaining the original aspect ratio. This shifts attention toward the seated person and the denser section of skyline behind them. Upright perspective correction helps the high-rise verticals read more cleanly. Inference: this geometric treatment makes the photograph feel more deliberate and architectural while preserving the informal waterfront moment.
Light and tone
Exposure is essentially unchanged, so the look comes mainly from tonal redistribution. Highlights are reduced strongly (-56) and shadows are opened substantially (+52), recovering sky and building detail while making the shaded figure and foreground more readable. Whites are raised (+25) and blacks deepened (-24), with a small contrast increase, giving the recovered image some punch. A custom tone curve then lifts the absolute black point and compresses the brightest endpoint. Together, these adjustments produce detailed midtones and defined dark forms without fully crisp, digital-looking black and white endpoints—the basis of the faded print character.
Color treatment
The custom white balance is fairly neutral daylight with a slight magenta tint, supporting the cool blue-gray atmosphere without introducing a strong cast. Most individual color families are selectively desaturated: blue is reduced by 30, orange by 37, magenta by 31, purple by 47, with smaller reductions to aqua, green, and yellow. This mutes the water, sky, buildings, vegetation, clothing, and skin-associated orange tones while leaving red saturation unchanged. Red hue is shifted toward orange, helping any remaining warm accents feel less sharply red. The RGB curves add subtle channel shaping; their upper portions favor blue and green slightly, reinforcing the cool, understated highlights. No color grading or split toning was added.
Detail and texture
Sharpening is moderate, enough to define architecture and the water’s surface without an aggressive microcontrast effect. Clarity, Texture, and Dehaze remain at zero, so the scene avoids exaggerated edge contrast or atmospheric crispness. The ISO 100 capture did not require luminance noise reduction; none was applied. Standard color noise reduction is present to suppress small chroma artifacts.
Film-like effects
Grain is the strongest finishing effect: Amount 40 with a moderate Size of 25 adds visible texture across the sky, water, and flat building surfaces. Because no post-crop vignette is used, attention is guided by composition, tonal contrast, and the isolated figure rather than artificial edge darkening. Inference: the grain, muted palette, and softened tonal endpoints are intended to evoke a scanned color photograph or understated documentary print.
What mattered most
- Strong highlight recovery and shadow opening preserve detail across a naturally high-contrast waterfront scene.
- Raised whites and lowered blacks restore structure, while the custom curve softens the extreme endpoints for a faded-print quality.
- Selective HSL desaturation creates the cool, muted urban palette without converting the image to monochrome.
- Moderate sharpening plus substantial grain provides definition with an analog documentary texture.
- Cropping and Upright correction strengthen the relationship between the seated figure and the skyline.
